The Little Mermaid Director Explains the Purpose of the Movie’s New Song
The Little Mermaid’s first full trailer was released during Sunday Night’s Academy Awards, giving fans of the Disney princess their first look at her live-action debut. As with many other Disney live-action remakes, the movie is being expanded from the 1989 animated classic, and that includes new songs that will be heard for the first time in the movie alongside the likes of ‘Under The Sea’ and ‘Part of Your World’.
Speaking in a new interview with Empire Magazine, director Rob Marshall explained how one new song, ‘For The First Time’, will resonate with anyone who had ever experienced new and unexpected. He said of the new song:
It was revealed early in the movie’s production that the film would be enlisting the song-writing talents of Hamilton’s Lin-Manuel Miranda and original Little Mermaid songwriter Alan Menken. Bringing back long-term Disney collaborator Menken ensures the new songs will hold the same feel and musical tone of the classic songs of the original movie, but the addition of Miranda, who most recently provided the songs for Disney’s smash hit Encanto, is a master-stroke to the production.
While there is now just two months until The Little Mermaid debuts in cinemas, it was over a year ago when the subject of the movie’s new musical additions were discussed. Having been delayed almost a whole year due to the ongoing issues faced in the wake of the Covid pandemic, fans have waited a long time to see Halle Bailey finally take her place among the live-action Disney princesses such as Naomi Scott’s Princess Jasmine and Emma Watson’s Belle. When it comes to her musical abilities, there is no doubting Bailey’s talent, and Miranda previously spoke about his excitement for the reveal of the new tracks.
The Little Mermaid has faced its fair share of negativity over its casting, but there is little doubt that the film will be one of the biggest hits of the year when it washes up in cinemas on May 26, 2023.
