This is a poem on Saudi education by the Saudi poet,

Nimah Ismail Nawwab from her English anthology  “The Unfurling”

published in the United States.

Nimah is from Makkah and she currently lives with her husband

and children in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia

هذه القصيدة عن التعليم في السعودية للشاعرة نعمة إسماعيل نواب من ديوان (مقتطفات) بعنوان ( The Unfurling) ،وطبع في الولايات المتحدة. السيدة نعيمة من مكة المكرمة وتعيش حاليا في الظهران مع زوجها وأبنائها.

​​”Recipe for Knowledge”

Open up canned books,

Fork out the subjects,

Spread out the math, science, history, literature,

Slather with flowery phrases,

Mix in tongue-twisting passages,

Spice up with lengthy, peppery pages,

Heat, Simmer till dried into a solid mass

Of intimidating, mysterious tomes

Cool, and turn on their sides,

Brush with the yolk of white wishy-washy learning.

Measure in years of memorizing,

Pick over each word carefully,

Dice up creativity into slim, slim slivers,

Sift and wipe clean of creativity,

Prune and slash threatening questions,

Beat in harshness, discipline,

Mix it well; mix it well.

Add mandated narrow dogmas,

Sift out other approaches,

Skewer systematic planning,

Wash away the roots of ingenuity,

Scoop out criticism,

Stuff the tender shoots, receptive brains

With reams of evaporated needless figures and facts,

Freeze for decades.

Bring out and dust off any residual powder,

Defrost the books, systems and schools,

Sprinkle in new frustrated teachers,

Sift in tiny, tiny specks of training,

Spread on rich, thick layers of low budgets,

Mix with needy, demanding parents,

Drain out their questions and comments,

Set students aside for later handling.

Bring to a boil,

Run through numerous studies,

Offer tiny sips to well-formed committees,

Remove after years of contention.

Set on a new shiny silver tray,

Rearrange the mixture into new patterns,

Turn into delicate, aromatic appetizers,

To appease the hungry nation.

Feed them till every didactic morsel is devoured.

اخلطي بلسانك مقاطع شائكة

صعبة الفهم

أضيفي بعضا من الصفحات المُبهرة والتفاصيل الكثيرة

لتعطي الخليط شيئا من الحيوية

قومي بتسخين خليط المعلومات المخيفة الغامضة

على نار هادئة

ليصبح كثيفًا ولزجًا

دعيها لتبرد

ثم اقلبيها على جنبيها

واطلي بالصُفرةِ التعليم السطحي.

 سنوات الحفظِ

هي مقياس ما تعلموه

اختاري مكونات الكلمات بعناية

قطّعي الإبداع اجزاء صغيرةٍ صغيرة

قومي بغربلة الإبداع وامسحيه ونظفيه

قـلّـمي واقطعي الأسئلة المحفزة/ التهديدية

اخلطيها جيدًا

اخلطيها جيدًا

افرضي عليهم مفاهيم ومعتقدات محدودة

غربلي أي مكونات أخرى

ارفضي التخطيط المنهجي

اقطعي جذور الإبداع

تجاهلي النقد

استعملي صفحات وأرقام وحقائق تافهة

حشوة للبراعم الصغيرة والعقول القابلة للتشكيل/ للحشو

ثم جمديها لسنوات

بعد إخراجها

ذوّبي الجليد عن الكتب والأنظمة والمدارس

انفضي ما تبقى عليها من غبار

انثري عليها معلمين محبطين مستجدين

اضيفي كميات قليلة من التدريب

ضعي على الخليط كميات غنية ذات رغوة

من الميزانيات المنخفضة

امزجيها مع متطلبات الآباء المحتاجين

ولنجاح الخليط

قومي بتنشيف أسئلتهم وتعليقاتهم

ضعي تركيبة الطلبة جانبًا

وتعاملي معه بعد حين

دعي الخليط يفور

بالدراسة كثيرًا

قدمي رشفات مركزة وصغيرة إلى اللجان التي تم تشكيلها جيدًا

وأزيليها بعد سنوات من الخلاف

قومي بتشكيل الخليط في أنماط جديدة

حوليها إلى مقبلات ذات رائحة عطرية خفيفة

ضعيها على صينية جديدة من الفضة اللامعة

أطعميهم

وليلتهموا كل القطع

حتى الشبع.
