Pet Sematary: Bloodlines 2 & Future Addressed By Director

Pet Sematary: Bloodlines co-writer/director Lindsey Anderson Beer addresses the movie’s potential sequel and future, expressing a desire to delve deeper into Stephen King’s horror story. Pet Sematary: Bloodlines premieres on Paramount+ on October 6 and serves as a prequel to both the 2019 adaptation and King’s novel. The prequel follows Jud Crandall (Jackson White) as a young man and how he became tied to the small town of Ludlow and the evil in its pet cemetery. Its exploration of Jud’s past takes viewers into new territory, as King’s book and the 2019 movie only briefly touched on Crandall’s past.

In an interview with GamesRadar, Beer opened up about the future of Pet Sematary: Bloodlines. She expressed an interest in expanding the series further, perhaps with a sequel, pointing out that there are many unanswered questions about the backstory of Pet Sematary, namely where the evil comes from and when the phenomenon started. Check out her statement below:

While Beer is interested in expanding the Pet Sematary franchise further, it remains to be seen if this will come to fruition. A significant deciding factor in whether the series continues will be how Pet Sematary: Bloodlines performs upon its release. It is a streaming release, though, so its performance will be a little harder to measure without box office numbers. Still, a King-inspired horror movie right in time for Halloween could draw in some strong viewership.

While it is awaiting its streaming release, the movie first premiered at Fantastic Fest on September 23, and some early reviews have started rolling in, with its current Rotten Tomatoes score sits at 23%. The score may change as further reviews arrive, and the audience score could be very different. However, the current score is considerably lower than both the 1989 and 2019 Pet Sematary adaptations’ mixed receptions. At the same time, King, who has been open about his approval or disapproval of his adaptations, approved of Pet Sematary: Bloodlines, noting some creative liberties were taken, but ultimately praising it as a “fine story.”
