Priyanka Chopra: Redefining Global Stardom

After more than a decade in Hollywood, Priyanka Chopra Jonas is not slowing down. During a keynote at the Cannes Lions International Festival, the Indian superstar revealed her new professional chapter—one focused on reinvention, breaking cultural barriers, and expanding her influence far beyond the traditional constraints of the film industry.
Breaking the “Glass Ceiling” in Hollywood
Chopra spoke candidly about the challenges she faced as an Indian woman in the West. She noted that when she first arrived, major studios often struggled to envision someone of her background leading massive blockbusters. Rather than waiting for traditional doors to open, she took control of her career, noting that women in entertainment must often create their own opportunities to shatter the “glass ceiling.”

Ideas as the New Currency
Highlighting the shift in modern entertainment, Chopra emphasized that the rise of digital platforms has democratized storytelling. “If you have an idea, film it and post it,” she said, citing how low-budget hits have proven that talent and unique perspectives now matter more than studio gatekeepers. For her, digital streaming has made language a non-issue, allowing global hits like Squid Game and Parasite to become cultural phenomena.
A New Focus: Producing and Purpose
Chopra’s move into production wasn’t just a business pivot—it was a mission. She launched her own production company to champion emerging filmmakers who have brilliant concepts but lack industry access. Her upcoming slate includes:
-
“Rest”: A psychological thriller co-starring Orlando Bloom. The film follows a woman trapped in the wilderness with no memory, forced to trust a stranger.
-
“Varanasi”: An ambitious project directed by S.S. Rajamouli. Filmed in Telugu, the movie is set for a 2027 release and is planned to be dubbed into nearly 200 languages, representing her vision of a borderless cinematic future.

Balancing Life and Ambition
Reflecting on motherhood, Chopra admitted that her priorities have undergone a total transformation. She is no longer the actress signing on for five movies a year; she has become highly selective about how she spends her time. Despite the balancing act, she remains undeterred by change. “Evolution is hard,” she concluded, “but I love the challenges.”
