Indiana Jones 5 Scene Will De-Age Harrison Ford To Original Movie Era

The opening scene of the highly anticipated Indiana Jones 5 will feature a significantly more youthful Harrison Ford thanks to de-ageing technology. The upcoming final installment of the beloved adventure series arrives nearly 15 years after its polarizing predecessor, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which at the time was assumed to be the final addition to the franchise. However, in 2021 it was announced that Ford would turn in one last performance as the iconic archeologist and adventurer in a finale helmed by Logan director James Mangold.

While most details have been kept under wraps until the film’s 2023 release, Mangold discussed with Empire how the opening shots of Indiana Jones 5 will feature a version of the lead character that appears similarly to how audiences may remember him from the fan-favorite installment, Raiders of the Lost Ark. The director explains that the film will include a time jump between the 1940s as Jones battles Nazis, to the late 1960s where Jones’ final adventure will intersect with the space race between the United States and Russia. Check out what Mangold had to say below:

This is not the first time the cast and crew have opened up about the lengths gone to in order to properly address Ford’s age in Indiana Jones 5. In fact, Mangold recently revealed that the original Indiana Jones 5 script went through rewrites due to it including mostly ‘old jokes’ about the many years it’s been since Indy last graced the big screen, rather than a meaningful exploration of what it means for a hero to now be in his 80s and still have an appetite for adventure. The attention paid to this aspect of the film is refreshing and will certainly add to the depth of this final installment of the series now led by an older lead, which is not often the case in any Hollywood movies, especially when it comes to those in the action genre.

As Ford joked at a recent D23 appearance, he will no longer “fall down” for fans, even in character as Indy now that his life and career have evolved. Though the final installment of Indiana Jones marks the end of the Oscar nominee’s tenure as such a quintessential figure of the action and adventure genres, it is clear that he has much more to accomplish as an actor. Ford will star in two television shows set to be released later this year, including Shrinking alongside Jason Segel (How I Met Your Mother), and a western drama series called 1923 for Paramount+, as well as the upcoming 2024 Marvel film Captain America: New World Order.

As the final film of the series, expectations for Indiana Jones 5 are extremely high. Following the poor reception of the fourth film and the fact that the upcoming finale will be the first installment of the franchise not to be written by George Lucas or directed by Steven Spielberg, the excitement is mixed with some hesitation in what to expect from Ford’s send-off. However, if the care Mangold took in meaningfully addressing the title character’s age is any indication of the conscientiousness he embodied while tackling this project, his collaboration with Ford for Indiana Jones 5 should offer a satisfying conclusion to the beloved series.
